The most important thing about water changes is keeping the Ph exactly the same and also the temperature within 5 degrees. During the first month feed your goldies every other day just once, all they can eat in 3 minutes. Underfeeding will not hurt them. Over feeding at this time can be deadly. After the tank has cycled, when readings for ammonia and nitrite have risen then fallen to zero AND you finally get some reading for nitAte then you know all is well. Green algae growing on the glass and ornaments is the final step, but you may not see it for a few months. After the tank has cycled you may stop changing water so vigerously. With what you say I would recommend changing the water 25-50% every two weeks. Clean your filter a few days later but make sure that's done once a month. Replace carbon monthly. Wash any foam pads or bio-beads in tank water. You are not only taking care of fish you are taking care of the bacteria that control the waste products of your fish.
